When I was in my early 20’s I had no plans for the future and just kind of lived life day to day without purpose or direction. I didn’t feel lost but to my roommate, my co-workers and my friends, I looked like I was lost with no real thoughts about why I was doing what I was doing, I was just going through the motions because it was expected. I wanted to do more in life like travel, try new experiences and just do more of the things I enjoyed, but didn’t think it was possible and I had no clue how I could go beyond the life of working a corporate job I very much needed to pay the bills.
At the time, I had this friend who was an actor and a martial arts instructor. I really admired him mostly because he was not part of the corporate world and not trying to climb a corporate ladder. He had a vision for his life, his career and he was making progress. He had minor roles in major films, wrote a screenplay that gained some interest and taught martial arts. Our lives were so different and yet we were all just trying to carve out a life that made us happy.
Then one day he gave me a book he was reading that helped him find focus and purpose while letting go of any doubts about the path he was creating for himself. The book was by Deepak Chopra: The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. This was my first practical experience in the realm of spiritualism, although my roommate was the first to really open my mind to using crystals and other forms of new age spiritualism. I never really got that into it all, but I do believe it’s real and there are practical uses for some forms of it.
A few years later I bought Deepak Chopra’s next book, The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire which, helped me realize there is a connection between belief and experience. Today, it’s very common for people to use the power of visualization, meditation and other practical tools from the realm of spirituality to manifest our desires, or in other words achieve our goals. Back in the early 90’s this was not as widely accepted and thought to be just nonsense. Thankfully, it’s so mainstream now, even my doctors including my nutritionist all recommend (almost prescribe) meditation as a way to distress and improve my sleep cycle (sounds so Borg, IYKYK!). It’ just amazing when something works, it has a way of becoming ingrained in our lives regardless of the negative naysayers.
I read The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire and took notes, I was determined to transform my life into what I envisioned. It worked! I wanted to do more of what I wanted, which included generating passive income, driving a Mercedes Benz, and buying a new home. All of which I achieved. I actually remember driving on the 405 freeway on my way home from rehabbing an investment property. Next to me was a car that became my dream, a brand new Mercedes Benz SL convertible, the thing is I was more drawn to the blue tinted windows for some reason, not sure why I guess it was just different. A few years later, I bought a Mercedes not the sl or a convertible but it was a Benz and I was stoked. The next day I noticed, the windows were tinted blue, just like my dream car! So I got the blue tinted windows and I am still waiting for my convertible SL. The moral of the story: be careful of what you are focused on, that just might be what you get.
